2000 "Sea Dogs" (SD)

The Sea Dogs series saw the light of day with the first entry being simply called Sea Dogs (SD). At the time of its release, this game was something truly unique due to the fact that it was more or less three games in one with it featuring walkable land locations, sailing in 3D and a first rudimentary worldmap.

Sea Dogs (SD)

$12

While its popularity has decreased even within the community over the years, some members still play and enjoy it to this day.

Based on Storm engine 1.0

Offers one great storyline

Offers features such as sailing, walkable towns, trading and sea combat

No freeplay after the story is finished

In my opinion not really recommend due to fairly many game-breaking bugs and it basically not being runable on a modern Windows system

2003 "Pirates of the Caribbean" (POTC) (also referred to as "Sea Dogs 2")

Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC)/Sea Dogs 2 (SD 2) has been the game with which the series gained popularity not only in Europe but around the globe due to its highly recognizable branding. Many members of the community still hold this entry in the series dear to their heart because of its level of advancement for the time. Due to its popularity and level of customization, a number of mods was released for it throughout the early 2000's, although most of them have since been lost in the depths of the internet. As a result, this section will focus on the only mod for the game that is still in active development, called New Horizons.

Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC)/
Sea Dogs 2 (SD 2)

$5-20

Due to the Disney copyright on this game, this is the only entry in the series that cannot be found for a fixed price in a digital game store. Therefore the price varies depending on offers found on second hand platforms.

Based on Storm engine 2.0

Offers one great storyline with a length of 5-20 hours depending on playstyle

Offers features such as sailing, walkable towns and island jungles, special locations and ships, trading, land and sea combat

No freeplay after the story is finished

2006 Sea Dogs "Caribbean Tales" (CT)

Due to the Disney copyright on POTC as the entry before this one, the developers had to start from scratch for this game. This can be seen at times as the game features are completely different worldmap with different islands, towns, characters and ships.

Sea Dogs Caribbean Tales (CT)

$12 or $12

Compared to POTC, CT is missing some already introduced features such as walkable jungles and multi-screen towns. However, to make up for this, CT introduced a new, more complex fighting system.

Based on Storm engine 2.5

Offers a rudimentary storyline

Strong focus on freeplay

Offers features such as sailing, walkable towns, trading, land and sea combat

In my opinion only recommended when playing on the Maelstrom engine because of stability issues on the old CT engine

2009 Sea Dogs "City of the Abandoned Ships (COAS)"

Sea Dogs City of the Abandoned Ships (COAS) has been by far the game in the series with the most mods created for it. Below you will find a comparison of the most popular, largest and most up-to-date mods for the game, with most of them having evolved into being standalone.

Sea Dogs City of the Abandoned Ships (COAS)

$6.60 or $12

Compared to Sea Dogs CT, COAS was definitely an improved in regards to features and mechanics.

Based on Storm engine 2.8

Prone to crashing and being bug ridden

Offers one great prologue and a couple of important quests in addition to so-called nation questlines.

Strong focus on freeplay

Offers features such as sailing, walkable towns and island jungles, special locations and ships, diving, trading, land and sea combat

In my opinion only recommended when playing on the Maelstrom engine because of stability issues on the old COAS engine

2012 Sea Dogs "To Each His Own (TEHO)"

The 2012 Sea Dogs entry "To Each His Own" (TEHO) is often viewed in the community as another mod for the 2009 game COAS due to the lack of changes made regarding mechanics, locations and engine. The game is insofar unique as it is less open for freeplay compared to earlier Sea Dogs titles but more focused on a storyline. As this entry in the series was for many years not modable, no "large" mods have been ever been created.

Sea Dogs To Each His Own (TEHO)

2024 "Caribbean Legend" (CL)

The 2024 Sea Dogs entry "Caribbean Legend" (CL) is a remaster/remake of the 2012 entry "Sea Dogs To Each His Own" with the focus lying on creating a better experience, especially for newcomers, than the original game was able to offer. Even though it dropped the Sea Dogs prefix from its name, it is still a fully fledged entry in the series.
